TWO HUMPS OR ONE HUMPS!!
TWO HUMPS OR
ONE HUMPS!!
Camels have lived in the deserts for more than 3,000
years. Camels are mammals. They have long legs. They have a big lipped snout
and a humped back.
There
are two types of camels- Bactrian camel and Dromedary camel.
Bactrian Camel:- Bactrian Camel has two humps. They are generally found
in the deserts of Mongolia and China. A small population of Bactrian camels
exists in the Nubra valley of Ladakh (J&K) and some areas of southwest
Kazakhstan.
Dromedary Camel:- Dromedary Camel or Arabian camel has one hump. This
camel is common to North Africa and Middle East.
The hump of a camel does not contain water as most
people think! The hump contains fat. This fat gets broken down to get energy when
the food is scarce. If the fat inside the camel’s hump is consumed, it will
shrink, flop over, and hang at the camel’s side.
Humans have used camels as a means of transport for
thousands of years. People in the Middle East use camels like horses. They ride
them and use them to carry goods. Camels are called “ships of the desert”.
The climate of a desert is hot and dry and food and
water are scarce. Camels have thick lips. So, they can eat plants which have
thorns. A camel can drink up to 110 liters of water in just 13 minutes
(approx.). It can survive up to six months without food or water.
**FACT :- The Bactrian camel grows a
thick coat of hair each winter. This coat of hair falls off in spring.**
